Synchronisation

Theoretically, alfons can be synchronized across two workstations and used jointly – but not simultaneously. In practice, however, many synchronization solutions, such as Dropbox, fail due to these limitations. Furthermore, such scenarios are prone to errors and require a certain level of discipline from all involved to prevent simultaneous access to the same file. For those undeterred by this, a collection of workarounds follows.

• With Beta 11, we have optimized alfons so that content changes are now limited to individual files, thus avoiding large and unnecessary data transfers.

• Synchronization between different platforms, such as a Mac and a PC, is not possible. It's either two Macs OR two PCs.

• As mentioned earlier, Dropbox is unfortunately unsuitable because the files are not copied with the necessary care. We cannot test all solutions and systems, but Nextcloud would be an alternative. In this case, please add your alfons folder as a share on the first workstation or move it to the Nextcloud folder. Grant the second workstation the necessary access so that it can retrieve the alfons folder you just shared.

• To avoid data loss, please ensure that access is always only granted on one side and never on both sides simultaneously.
